Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a painful and potentially disabling disorder or quite possibly a small group of related clinical problems which afflict millions of patients . It is most common in middle aged women but also is seen in men and children. We have seen it in all age groups in our clinic . The underlying cause(s) is/are not yet clear, but probably have roots in Endocrine (Thyroid/Adrenal) and Neuromuscular (cellular metabolic) and Skeletal and Central Nervous System dysfunctions. Sleep disturbance, widespread pain of more than 3 months duration and extreme fatigue are commonly present as well. It may be associated with other disorders.
The average patient spends five years and thousands of dollars of her own money in search of a cure. Patients are often left frustrated , more depressed and angry after their search for help.

We are seeing more and more of it each year, which I firmly believe is due in a large part to our lifestyles and long-standing poor health habits. Family history and genetic predispositions can not be ignored.

Many drugs are ineffective in the long term, because they don't affect all the components of the disorder. Commonly the effects of antidepressant medications, especially the SRIs last less than one year. By time patients figure this out, the drugs themselves may have become a significant health problem.

A Diagnosis of Fibromyalgia commonly causes great family stress , because patients are not told that there are significant, non drug and inexpensive ways to help manage and sometimes reverse FMS.
